was auctioned again on 2nd April, 1998. Much emphasis was placed on the remaining art
deco decor but despite a good attendance, the building was passed in at $770,000.00. The

Elsternwick Classic Cinema Anniversary. On 1st April, a near capacity house attended a rare matinee
public screening of MGM's 1946 musical revue "Ziegfeld Follies" celebrating the first
anniversary of the Classic's re-opening. All seats were free and Mr. Eddie Tamir, the Classic
Manager, outlined his future plans to the audience. These include a fifteen week season of
old favorites such as "Grand Hotel", "Now, Voyager", "Blossoms in the Oust", etc. with three
matinee screenings per week. A further three cinemas are planned and the outcome of an
appeal is expected shortly. To complete the nostalgia, the Tivoli Ballet Girls presented a
number and well-known music teacher Nahama Patkin expertly accompanied the Charlie
Chaplin silent comedy short "The Rink" at the piano. "Ziegfeld Follies· was the first sound
film shown when the building re-opened in 1946 as the Esquire Theatre by Mr. Bill Howard,
after a long period as a dance hall. Previous activities included use as a public hall, skating
and silent films. This information was supplied to Mr. Tamir by one of the original patrons
and we wish the Classic Cinema many more successful years.
