slide projector was a manual adjusted carbon arc machine. I started it up and the audio tape. As each slide was projected I
would tweak the carbon adjustment. I don't know whether a slide was out of sequence, or I picked out the wrong one but
Rosemary Margan was talking about another matter than was on the screen. I could not rectify it. so I turned the machine
off and let Rosemary finish her spiel on the tape. Bill appeared and said that there were no slides on the screen. [told him
that the arc went out and I lost my place before I could get it going again.
On another occasion whilst I was on my own, The film ''Star'' was showing with Julie Andrews. I was rewinding the spool~
as they came off.l went back to the machine and looked through the porthole and saw that curtains were closed and the
image was projecting onto the curtains. I immediately said#*)+/!! and pressed the button to open the curtains. nothing
happened.! was thinking we will have to go down and try and open them. I then realised that Julie Andrews was singing on
the stage in front of these red velvet curtains. The illusion wac; c;o real and blended in with the theatre decor. What a relief.

The film exchanges would ometimes send prints for previews. After the show finished David would arrive after his stint.
Bill said," We will go and down and watch the show, you can run it.'' I would rather it be the other way around, as they were
not slow to criticise my efforts.

After about twelve months, the estate managing agents said to Bill that he was an excellent tenant but they required a
certain return on their investmelll and the rent would be doubled. Bill said that under the circumstances he could not
continue. The theatre was then taken over by Wards/Village and later closed. Hoyts now have their 10 cinema complex
             operating.

In retirement I have my home cinema. My pride is the pair of Toshiba TP IO's in cinema one. In cinema two I have my
trusty De Vry's. I have a pair of G B 's which I have restored. They came from the "Strand" in Ashford. N .S. W .. so I call my
setup the ''Strand One" and "Strand Two". The reason for having two cinemas is that, number one is in the house and I have
concerns about running nitrate film there.

Joining CATHS has enabled me to meet people of similar interest and ideas, and so far I lind it is a well-run club and the
outings are great. I am looking forward to the New Zealand trip in 2000.
